AI Sapiens K0 Timeline

ROBOTIS has indicated that the Dynamixel-Q quasi-direct-drive actuator family — which underpins the K0 platform — is scheduled for broader commercial release in the second half of 2026. This rollout is what makes K0 reproducible by other labs at scale rather than only by ROBOTIS itself.

ROBOTIS unveiled the AI Sapiens K0 in Seoul, positioning it as an open-source bipedal humanoid research platform. Specifications disclosed at the unveil: 1.3 m height, 34 kg weight, 23 active degrees of freedom, 23 in-house Dynamixel-Q QDD actuators (14 QM-060 and 9 QM-080), a 6 TOPS NPU and a 46.8 V / 9000 mAh battery. The full hardware BoM, CAD files, source code and simulation assets were released alongside the platform.

Around the K0 unveil, ROBOTIS framed the launch as a continuation of its long-running "open-platform" approach — the same approach the company applied to DARwIn-OP almost two decades earlier. The K0 release explicitly aims to lower rebuild friction for research labs and Physical AI teams.

In the year preceding the K0 unveil, ROBOTIS publicly developed its "AI Worker" platform, a precursor that informed the K0 architecture and the Dynamixel-Q actuator design choices. Technical materials around the AI Worker programme set the groundwork for the K0's open-source release.

ROBOTIS collaborated with Virginia Tech, Purdue University and the University of Pennsylvania (NSF-funded) to develop DARwIn-OP, a miniature humanoid open platform. DARwIn-OP went on to become the dominant base in the RoboCup KidSize soccer league and shaped a generation of academic humanoid research. The K0 inherits this open-platform DNA seventeen years later.

ROBOTIS was founded in South Korea by ByoungSoo Kim. The company's first major product line was the DYNAMIXEL smart actuator family — the same lineage the AI Sapiens K0 draws on through the new Dynamixel-Q QDD actuators twenty-seven years later.
